Session 3 YouTube Reflection

  1. What do you like about using the flipping tool you chose?
  2. What frustrates you about it?
  3. How did you direct others to your videos? Was it successful? Could you monitor the activity?
  4. What did you think this was going to be like, then what was it really like?
  5. What are the implications for your IT and academic honesty policies?

  1. I used a combination of a variety of tools to create my video. It involved creating a Powerpoint with embedded you tube videos. I created a voice over, to the powerpoint, but experienced a little trouble when trying to put it into a format that I could share. I overcame the trouble by using screen capture and going through my powerpoint; however the sound in the video has an echo, so I have some more things to work out to perfect my video crafting technique. I used Handbrake to make it smaller so I could add it to Google Drive for my staff to view. We have very slow internet in Indonesia, so it will be interesting to hear how the viewing goes for staff. I think I can definitely make videos quicker than I did today, because in the real world I won't have a day to dedicate to making an 8 min. video.

  2. I used zaption for the first time. I found it really useful because there are some great resources on the internet but it is hard for students to multitask by watching a video and answering questions. This tool allows students to make progress and check their learning as they go through the video without having to be in the classroom with the teacher shopping and asking questions.

I chose to incorporate my video link into a presentation to allow me to set the scene for my expectations. I think this works well but it does rely on the students having good internet access to be able to watch the video. This can be a problem in China so this would need to be tested before asking teachers to try out this tool.

There will be an implication on academic honesty but if this is taught and monitored throughout the school then the implications area minimal.

  3. I have been scared in this class because of my limited use of technology. Where PowerPoint has been always handy to me, such is no longer the case in this course. Through the help of Matthew, I was introduced to QuickTime Player but Zaption has proved to be the one that I found useful. I was able to create survey of previous knowledge as well as new concepts learned as the video progresses. At the end, some sort of reflection activity was added. I actually found this day very productive for me.

The speed of internet connections in the country varies from city to city. There may be issues in some areas. I will try to provide a CD or DVD copy or even use thumbdrive to ensure that students access the materials.

If implemented, our IT and academic honesty policy needs to be reviewed in order to ensure that students are doing the right thing.
